The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that 16 people died after consuming adulterated milk in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh.

The deaths occurred in Lalacheruvu, Chowdeshwarannagar, and Swarupnagar since mid-February. Victims reportedly consumed milk tainted with ethylene glycol, a toxic chemical known to cause multi-organ failure. At least four others remain hospitalised with similar symptoms.

Investigators traced the contamination to a dairy in Narsapuram village, which supplied milk to over 100 households. Most victims were elderly or children, and symptoms included abdominal pain, vomiting, anuria, and acute renal dysfunction.

NHRC issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Andhra Pradesh, demanding a detailed report within two weeks. The report must include:

  • Health status of affected individuals
  • Progress of investigation
  • Compensation details for next of kin

The Commission stated that the incident raises serious concerns about human rights violations and public safety.
