Naomi Osaka’s promising run before Wimbledon ended painfully on Saturday when she retired from the Bad Homburg Open final against Karolina Muchova due to an apparent injury.
The setback comes just two days before Wimbledon begins, raising fresh concerns about her fitness for the year’s third Grand Slam.
Osaka had enjoyed her best-ever grass-court tournament in Germany, reaching her first tour-level final on the surface. She defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova and Wang Xinyu with confidence, showing improved movement and comfort on grass. Her performances suggested she was finally overcoming struggles on a surface that had long been her weakest.
The final, however, brought disappointment. Muchova led 6-1, 1-0 when Osaka retired, visibly struggling physically. Tournament officials did not disclose the nature of the injury, and Osaka will undergo further assessment before Wimbledon.
The timing of the injury is critical. Wimbledon starts Monday, leaving Osaka little time to recover. Since returning to the tour after becoming a mother in 2023, she has steadily rebuilt her game. Her strong showing in Bad Homburg had raised hopes of a deep run at Wimbledon, where she has never advanced beyond the third round.
Muchova, meanwhile, celebrated a composed victory. The Czech star, known for her variety and tactical awareness, claimed the WTA 500 crown after defeating Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the semifinals. Her triumph makes her one of the form players heading into Wimbledon.
For Osaka, all eyes now turn to medical updates in the next 48 hours. Fans hope her retirement was precautionary, allowing her to compete at the All England Club.
