The ongoing geopolitical crisis in the Middle East could disrupt the scheduled rollout of 70 new mechanical road-sweeping machines (MRSMs) intended to boost Delhi’s sanitation fleet ahead of the critical winter pollution season.
While the procurement contract has been awarded and field trials for the EV- and CNG-powered European models commenced recently, disruptions along critical transit and shipping corridors have created bottlenecks.
Although individual units were temporarily airlifted for demonstration purposes, officials indicate that comprehensive delivery schedules face severe logistical headwinds.
MCD’s Contingency Strategy
To prevent any sanitation gaps during peak pollution months when road dust significantly spikes PM10 levels, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated a backup plan. The civic body has floated a pan-India tender to locally hire 40 additional mechanical road sweepers for a four-month interim period.
Road dust remains a primary contributor to Delhi’s toxic air, accounting for up to a quarter of total particulate pollution according to historical estimates. The civic body currently operates 66 mechanical sweepers covering major arterial corridors. The incoming fleet of 70 advanced self-propelled machines—comprising 55 electric vehicles and 15 CNG units equipped with specialised front brushes—was designed to nearly double this operational capacity.
MCD authorities maintain that alternative transit arrangements are being actively explored to ensure that the primary European shipment arrives by mid-November, while the emergency hiring tender acts as an effective safety net.
