India women’s cricket icon Harmanpreet Kaur has officially stepped down as captain of the national team across all three formats, drawing the curtains on one of the most defining leadership tenures in the history of Indian women’s sport.
The decision was announced by the veteran batter through a poignant social media statement on Tuesday morning, where she expressed that she leaves the role with “peace” and pride after sacrificing personal milestones for the greater good of the squad.
”I Gave This Team Everything I Had”
Reflecting on her captaincy journey, Harmanpreet highlighted the emotional weight and responsibility she carried throughout her tenure.
“This is not an easy decision. It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I have given everything I had to this team… Captaincy may end today, but my love for Indian cricket never will,” she wrote.
Major Highlights of Her Captaincy Era:
- Pioneering Success: Led India to historic moments, including the Gold Medal win at the Asian Games, a Silver Medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and multiple ICC tournament knockout appearances.
- Team-First Philosophy: Acknowledged prioritizing squad development and young talent over individual statistics during crucial phases of her leadership.
- Focusing on Batting: Clarified that while her stint as captain ends, she intends to continue playing for India strictly as a batter.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the new captain across formats shortly ahead of upcoming international commitments.
