A deeply distressing incident from Keonjhar has drawn widespread attention after a man reportedly carried his deceased sister’s skeletal remains to a bank in an attempt to withdraw money from her account.

The incident occurred at a branch of Odisha Grameen Bank in Patana block, where the man, identified as Jeetu Munda, had allegedly faced repeated refusals despite informing officials about his sister’s death.

Family’s Struggle to Access Funds

According to reports, Jeetu Munda had been trying to withdraw ₹20,000 from the account of his late sister, Kalra Munda, who passed away earlier this year. Despite multiple visits to the bank with her passbook, he claimed that officials insisted on the physical presence of the account holder.

Frustrated by the situation and lacking clarity on the required legal process, he reportedly exhumed her remains and brought them to the bank as proof of her death.

Lack of Awareness and Communication Gaps

Local officials indicated that the incident highlights a serious gap in awareness regarding financial procedures. Authorities stated that the man was unaware of legal requirements such as nominee claims or legal heir certification.

Police officials also noted that the situation escalated due to inadequate communication from bank staff regarding the correct process to access funds after the account holder’s death.

Government Orders Action

Reacting to the incident, Suresh Pujari condemned the handling of the case and called for strict action against those responsible.

He emphasised that such incidents reflect a lack of sensitivity and must not be treated as isolated cases. The government has assured that appropriate steps will be taken to address the issue and prevent recurrence.

Administrative Response and Support

Following the incident, local police intervened and assured assistance to Jeetu Munda in completing the necessary formalities. Authorities also confirmed that the remains were respectfully reburied.

Officials from the district administration have now stepped in to facilitate the withdrawal process in accordance with legal provisions.

Understanding the Legal Process

In cases where the account holder has passed away, banks typically require documents such as:

  • Death certificate
  • Nominee details (if available)
  • Legal heir certificate (if no nominee exists)

Officials clarified that in this case, the nominee had also passed away, making Jeetu the likely claimant, subject to documentation.

Broader Concerns on Financial Inclusion

The incident has raised important concerns about financial literacy, accessibility, and institutional sensitivity—particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Experts note that improving awareness and simplifying procedures can help prevent such distressing situations and ensure dignified access to essential services.
