A shocking incident unfolded in Bimalagada Jhumpudi under K. Balang police limits in Sundargarh, where a 24‑year‑old son attacked his mother with an axe, leading to her death.
The victim has been identified as 45‑year‑old Umabati Mahali.
Police said the assault occurred late Sunday night during a quarrel between the accused, Budhuram Mahali and his wife. When Umabati intervened to stop the fight, Budhuram struck her on the head with an axe. She collapsed at the spot and suffered heavy bleeding. No one rushed her to the hospital immediately, and she died on Monday afternoon.
Following a written complaint lodged by her nephew, Sama Mahali, police reached the scene, seized the body, and conducted inquest proceedings with the help of a scientific team. The body was sent for a post‑mortem before being handed over to the family.
Police registered a murder case and arrested Budhuram Mahali. Officials confirmed that the accused was produced in court today and remanded to custody. Investigators said scene reconstruction will be carried out to establish the sequence of events.
K. Balang police officer Ashok Behera stated that the accused has been formally charged, and further investigation is underway.
