Cuttack: River Mahanadi today crossed the danger mark at Mundali following the opening of 34 sluice gates of Hirakud dam in the last couple of days.

The authorities opened 34 of the 64 sluice gates of Hirakud dam due to a rise in water level in the reservoir following heavy rain in the upper catchment area of Mahanadi in Chhattisgarh.

Mahanadi is now flowing over its danger mark of 97.25 feet at Mundali while 1160900 cusec floodwater is flowing through the barrage.

According to reports, flood water from other tributary rivers are flowing into the Mahanadi River and water from the upper catchment and lower catchment areas are also responsible for the increase in the water level in Mahanadi River.

On the other hand, the water level at Kathajodi and Mahanadi rivers are increasing due to the release of the excess flood water from the Hirakud dam.
