The Centre on Saturday announced the appointment of Lieutenant General (retd) NS Raja Subramani as India’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the country’s new Navy chief.
Official orders regarding both appointments were issued early on Saturday morning. The appointments come at a significant time as India continues to push ahead with major defence reforms and military modernisation initiatives.
Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani to Take Charge as CDS
Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani will assume office as the next Chief of Defence Staff on May 30, succeeding General Anil Chauhan. He will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs.
Currently serving as Military Adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat, Subramani retired as Vice Chief of Army Staff on July 31, 2025, after completing nearly four decades of military service.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, he was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. During his distinguished career, he also served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command headquartered in Lucknow.
Extensive Strategic and Academic Experience
Lt Gen Subramani is known for his operational expertise and strategic understanding of both India’s western and northern borders. He has also undergone advanced military education at prestigious institutions, including the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom and the National Defence College in New Delhi.
Academically, he holds a Master of Arts degree from King’s College London and an MPhil in Defence Studies from the University of Madras.
His appointment comes at a crucial phase when the Defence Ministry is actively pursuing long-term reforms, including the integration of theatre commands aimed at improving coordination among the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Vice Adm Krishna Swaminathan Named New Navy Chief
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan will take over as the next Chief of Naval Staff on May 31, replacing Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi.
Currently heading the Mumbai-based Western Naval Command, Swaminathan previously served as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff and has held several key operational and administrative roles during his naval career.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, he specialises in communication and electronic warfare.
Distinguished Naval Career and Leadership Roles
Vice Adm Swaminathan is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom, the College of Naval Warfare in Karanja and the United States Naval War College in Rhode Island.
Over the years, he has commanded several major naval platforms, including missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore and aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
He also served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the Southern Naval Command in Kochi and played a major role in strengthening operational safety standards within the Indian Navy.

The appointments of Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani and Vice Adm Krishna Swaminathan are being viewed as important developments in India’s evolving military structure and strategic planning framework.
