The Lok Sabha passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, recognising Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The bill, adopted by voice vote, received support from the Congress, BJP, and TDP, while the YSR Congress Party opposed it.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore said his party fully supports Amaravati as the capital but reiterated the demand for special status to Andhra Pradesh. He urged that Amaravati should develop like Bengaluru, Chennai, or Hyderabad, while other cities such as Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, and Kurnool should also grow.

TDP MP and Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani appealed for unanimous passage, stressing that the bill ensures a permanent capital for the state. BJP MP C M Ramesh called the legislation historic, noting it is the first time Parliament has declared a specific place as a state capital. He criticised the earlier three-capital plan as “illogical and irrational.”

YSRCP MP P V Midhun Reddy opposed the bill, demanding protection of farmer interests and a clear timeline for compensation. He highlighted that 34,000 acres were acquired for Amaravati with promises of developed plots, housing, and education, which remain unfulfilled. He questioned funding sources for such a large capital project.

The bill amends Section 5 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, to incorporate Amaravati as the capital effective June 2, 2024. It follows a resolution passed by the state assembly on March 28 requesting statutory clarity.
