Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Koraput Coffee, describing it as a “source of pride for Odisha” for both its distinctive flavour and its socioeconomic impact. Speaking during the 127th episode of his monthly radio address, Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister highlighted how the coffee grown in Koraput district has become a symbol of self-reliance and local entrepreneurship.
Coffee That Changed Lives in Odisha
PM Modi said coffee cultivation in Koraput, located in the Eastern Ghats, is not only appreciated for its taste but also for the positive change it has brought to the lives of local farmers, especially tribal communities and women.
“There are people in Koraput who are cultivating coffee through sheer passion. They left handsome corporate jobs because they loved coffee so much. Many women’s lives have also been pleasantly transformed by coffee,” said the Prime Minister.
He added that Koraput Coffee is encouraging young people to return to agriculture, providing new opportunities for income generation and rural employment. Its growing popularity has also put Odisha on the global coffee map, with international buyers showing increasing interest in its aroma and flavour.
Koraput Coffee: A Legacy and a Livelihood
Coffee cultivation in Koraput dates back to the 1930s, when it was initiated by King Rajbahadur Rama Chandra Deo. The State Soil Conservation Department expanded these plantations in 1958 to strengthen local agriculture.
Today, the Odisha government supports coffee growers through initiatives like the Tribal Development Co-operative Corporation of Odisha Limited (TDCCOL) and the Koraput Agro Product Producer Company Limited. Together, they help procure around 60 metric tonnes of coffee from local farmers each year.
The state has also assisted in branding “Koraput Coffee”, which has gained traction in national and international markets for its 100% Arabica beans and unique flavour profile.
A Symbol of Pride and Progress
Recognising these efforts, PM Modi said,
“Koraput Coffee is truly delectable! This indeed is a pride of Odisha.”
With its growing reputation, Koraput Coffee not only celebrates the region’s natural bounty but also reflects India’s commitment to empowering rural and tribal communities through sustainable livelihoods.
