One of the most wanted criminals in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, Prabhat Malik, was injured during a police encounter in the Mahuldiha forest area early Tuesday morning. According to police officials, Malik sustained a bullet injury to his right knee during an operation linked to a robbery investigation.
Authorities said the accused has more than 40 criminal cases registered against him, including charges related to extortion, robbery, and other serious offences.
Police Recover Firearm and Cash
During the operation, police recovered a firearm and ₹12,000 in cash from Malik’s possession. Officials stated that the accused was being questioned in connection with a recent loot case and the recovery of stolen money.
According to investigators, Malik revealed information about the location where a portion of the stolen cash had allegedly been hidden. Police teams subsequently accompanied him to the Mahuldiha forest area to recover the money.
Alleged Escape Attempt Led to Exchange of Fire
Police sources said that at around 4 a.m., Malik allegedly attempted to escape. During the operation, he reportedly accessed a concealed firearm and opened fire on the police team.
In response, police personnel fired in self-defence. Malik was injured in the exchange and was immediately taken into custody. Officials confirmed that he suffered a gunshot wound to his right knee.
Shifted to SCB Medical College for Advanced Treatment
Following the incident, Malik was initially admitted to Keonjhar Medical College and Hospital. However, after his condition reportedly worsened due to significant blood loss, doctors referred him to SCB Medical College and Hospital for specialised treatment.
Police said his condition is being monitored while further investigation continues.
Residents Welcome Action Against Repeat Offenders
Prabhat Malik had been on the radar of law enforcement agencies for several years. Residents in different parts of Keonjhar had frequently raised concerns about alleged criminal activities linked to him.
Many local residents expressed relief following the operation, viewing it as a significant step in efforts to curb organised crime and strengthen public safety in the region.
Police officials stated that investigations are ongoing and additional details may emerge as the case progresses.
