India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is reportedly set to miss the second Test against England at Edgbaston as part of a workload management strategy, according to recent media reports.
Following a demanding performance in the first Test at Headingley, where Bumrah bowled nearly 45 overs across both innings, the team management is expected to rest him to prevent injury recurrence. India lost that match by five wickets, and Bumrah went wicketless in the second innings, adding to concerns over his physical strain.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir had already hinted that Bumrah would feature in only three Tests during the England tour, citing the fast bowler’s susceptibility to injuries. Bumrah had previously suffered a back injury during India’s tour of Australia earlier this year, which sidelined him at a crucial time.
Gambhir told BBC Sport:
“We won’t change the plan. Managing his workload is more important. There’s a lot of cricket ahead, and we’ll decide which two more Tests he plays based on his physical condition.”
With Bumrah likely out, Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep may be in contention for a spot in the playing XI, though the team will be under pressure without their premier strike bowler.
This decision underscores India’s cautious approach toward safeguarding their pace spearhead’s longevity ahead of a packed international calendar.
