On Tuesday, scheduled quarterfinal fixtures featuring Sri Lanka against Nepal and Bangladesh against Malaysia were abandoned without a single ball being bowled. No toss took place, yet match outcomes were decided off the field. By virtue of their superior ICC T20I rankings, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh advanced to the semifinals—a repeat of the fate that saw defending champions India and Pakistan progress a day earlier after their respective clashes against Afghanistan and Hong Kong, China were similarly washed out.
Nepal, having put together an impressive group campaign that included a victory over Afghanistan, was eliminated from medal contention without getting the chance to play in the knockout round.
Semifinal Lineup Confirmed
With all four quarterfinals falling victim to Japan’s inclement weather, the semifinal matchups are set:
- Semifinal 1: India vs Sri Lanka
- Semifinal 2: Pakistan vs Bangladesh
Both matches are scheduled for Thursday. However, local meteorological forecasts offer little reassurance, showing a 60% probability of rain on matchday.
Should weather disrupt Thursday’s semifinals, tournament regulations stipulate that the higher-ranked teams automatically qualify for the final. Under this scenario, both India and Pakistan would advance, setting up a clash between the rival nations for the gold medal on October 3.
The Updated Rulebook Twist
While an India-Pakistan final is an appealing prospect for organizers and fans, persistent rain could make the conclusion unusual.
At the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, India claimed gold when their final against Afghanistan was rained out, benefiting from the rule that awarded top honors to the higher-seeded team. For the 2026 edition, however, officials updated the playing conditions: if the final ends in a wash-out without a result, the two finalists will be declared joint winners and share the gold medal.
A shared gold medal would create a rare scene at the medal ceremony, given the diplomatic and cricketing backdrop of recent encounters between the two sides. Following heightened geopolitical tensions over the past year, Indian players have maintained a non-handshake protocol in fixtures against Pakistan. Furthermore, Indian squads declined to share podiums or accept trophies directly from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) leadership during recent tournaments.
Organizers are hoping for clear skies over the coming days to allow the tournament to be settled on the field rather than by ranking tables and weather updates.
