A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on April 20, 2026, prompting authorities to issue an urgent tsunami alert across several coastal regions.

According to national broadcaster NHK, the earthquake led to immediate safety advisories, with emergency services placed on high alert to assess damage and respond to any potential impact.

Tsunami Waves of Up to 3 Metres Expected

Officials have warned that tsunami waves reaching heights of up to 3 metres could impact parts of Iwate Prefecture and Hokkaido.

Authorities indicated that waves may arrive in multiple surges and could vary in intensity. Residents in vulnerable coastal areas have been strongly advised to evacuate to higher ground without delay.

Urgent Evacuation Advisory Issued

In its official advisory, the government emphasised that tsunami waves were already approaching some coastal zones and could strike repeatedly. People in affected areas have been urged to remain in safe locations until all warnings are lifted.

Officials also cautioned that wave timings and heights may differ from forecasts, increasing the importance of immediate evacuation and continued vigilance.

Authorities Monitor Situation Closely

Emergency response teams are actively monitoring the evolving situation, focusing on coastal safety, infrastructure impact, and public protection.

Residents have been advised to stay away from beaches, shorelines, and river mouths, where water levels may rise suddenly due to incoming waves.

Focus on Public Safety and Preparedness

Japan, known for its advanced disaster preparedness systems, has once again activated its early warning and response mechanisms to minimise risk and ensure public safety.

Further updates are expected as authorities continue to evaluate the situation and provide guidance to affected communities.
