The Middle East conflict entered its fourth week with renewed strikes on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, intensifying fears of escalation across the region.
Tehran confirmed that the site was hit by coordinated US and Israeli airstrikes but reported no radioactive leakage. The attack underscores the growing volatility of the war, which has already claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions.
President Donald Trump announced that the US is “close to meeting objectives” and hinted at winding down operations. Yet, in a contradictory move, Washington deployed additional naval assets and 2,500 Marines to the region, signalling continued military engagement. Iran, meanwhile, issued fresh threats, warning that recreational and tourist sites worldwide could become targets, raising alarms about potential attacks beyond the Middle East.
Leadership uncertainty in Tehran adds to the tension. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei delivered a Nowruz message, but his absence from public view has fueled speculation following Israeli strikes that killed his father and reportedly wounded him. This uncertainty compounds the instability gripping the nation.
The regional impact is severe. Israel continues its offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, resulting in over 1,000 deaths and displacing more than a million people. Iran’s missile and drone attacks have killed more than 1,300, while Israel has lost 15 citizens to retaliatory strikes. The US has suffered at least 13 military casualties.
Beyond the battlefield, the economic fallout is global. Oil prices have surged to $106 per barrel, prompting Washington to temporarily pause sanctions on Iranian oil shipments in an effort to stabilise fuel costs. Analysts warn that prolonged conflict could further disrupt energy markets and strain global economies.
As the war deepens, the absence of diplomatic breakthroughs leaves the region teetering on the edge of wider instability. The Natanz strike highlights the dangerous trajectory of a conflict with no clear resolution in sight.
