India’s new Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, presented a copy of his credentials to Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei in Beijing, marking the formal start of his tenure.
The Indian Embassy confirmed the credential ceremony through an official post.
Doraiswami also participated in the commemoration of the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor at the embassy. Officials saluted the courage of the armed forces and remembered victims of the Pahalgam terror attack, reiterating India’s resolve to fight terrorism in all forms.
A 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Doraiswami, previously served as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Fluent in Mandarin, he has earlier worked in Hong Kong and Beijing, giving him deep familiarity with China’s diplomatic landscape.
His appointment comes at a sensitive time as India and China attempt to normalise relations strained by the Ladakh standoff in 2020. Both countries are resuming visas and direct flights, signalling efforts to rebuild engagement across multiple fronts.
Doraiswami received a warm welcome from senior Chinese and Indian officials upon arrival in Beijing last Sunday. His posting is seen as a crucial step in advancing dialogue and stabilising ties between the two Asian powers.
