India delivered a batting masterclass in the opening T20I against New Zealand, posting a formidable 238 for 7 after being asked to bat first at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.

Young opener Abhishek Sharma led the charge with a sensational unbeaten 84 off just 35 deliveries, striking at over 240 while Rinku Singh provided the perfect finishing kick with a whirlwind 44 off 20 balls. The explosive total sets New Zealand a daunting target of 239 on a pitch that offered good pace and carry under lights.

After New Zealand skipper won the toss and opted to field, hoping to exploit early conditions, India’s aggressive approach immediately put the visitors on the back foot. Abhishek Sharma tore into the bowling attack from the outset, finding the boundary with ease and clearing it regularly to give India a flying start.

His knock was studded with audacious strokeplay, keeping the scoreboard ticking at a brisk rate and laying a solid platform. Despite losing partners at regular intervals, Abhishek remained unflustered, anchoring the innings while accelerating effortlessly.

The middle order contributed useful cameos, but it was Rinku Singh’s late assault that turned a strong total into an imposing one. Walking in during the death overs, Rinku unleashed a barrage of sixes and boundaries, ensuring India maximised the final five overs and crossed the 230-run mark comfortably.

India lost seven wickets in their pursuit of maximum runs, reflecting their ultra-aggressive mindset ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The batting display underlined the depth and fearless intent in the current Indian T20 setup.

New Zealand now face a stiff chase on a true Nagpur surface. Their bowlers were taken apart on the night, and their batters will need something special to overhaul the highest target ever set in a T20I at this venue.

The three-match T20I series is an important preparation phase for both sides ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup later this year. A win tonight would give India early momentum as they continue to fine-tune their combination.
