India has strongly pushed back against remarks made by the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) regarding recent mass detentions and security clampdowns in New Delhi, dismissing them as unwarranted interference in internal affairs.
The controversy follows widespread demonstrations called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities.
In an official statement shared by India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, New Delhi emphasized that the right to peaceful assembly is constitutionally guaranteed, though subject to necessary and reasonable restrictions for maintaining public order.
Highlighting the strength of the country’s independent judiciary and free media, the government asserted that state authorities acted strictly in accordance with the law while judicial avenues remain open for any grievances.
Furthermore, India urged the OHCHR to maintain impartiality and non-selectivity by directing equal attention toward large-scale protests globally.
