The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning across several districts of Odisha, alongside a heatwave alert expected to continue for the next seven days.

According to officials, fluctuating weather conditions are being driven by an upper air cyclonic circulation over North Coastal Odisha and nearby regions, leading to a mix of rainfall and intense heat.

Day-Wise Weather Forecast Across Odisha

Day 1 (April 19): Thunderstorms and Coastal Humidity

Light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in southern districts such as Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Gusty winds of 30–40 kmph and lightning may occur during afternoon or evening hours.

Meanwhile, coastal districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Puri, and Khorda are likely to experience hot and humid conditions, with warm nights in parts of western Odisha.

Day 2 (April 20): Heatwave Begins in Western Odisha

Thunderstorm activity will continue in southern districts. At the same time, heatwave conditions are expected to begin in western regions, including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bolangir, Nuapada, and Sambalpur. Coastal belts will remain humid and uncomfortable.

Day 3 (April 21): Heatwave Intensifies

Thunderstorms will persist in southern districts, while the heatwave is likely to intensify and expand across Sundargarh, Nuapada, Jharsuguda, Bolangir, Kalahandi, and Sambalpur. Coastal districts, including Khorda, will continue to experience humidity and warm nights.

Day 4 (April 22): Rising Heat, Limited Rainfall

Rainfall activity will reduce and remain mostly limited to Koraput and Malkangiri. However, heatwave conditions will expand further to include Bargarh and Boudh. Coastal and central districts will continue to face hot and humid weather.

Day 5 (April 23): Persistent Heatwave Conditions

Thunderstorms may return in parts of Koraput and Malkangiri, but heatwave conditions will persist across western Odisha, affecting multiple districts. Coastal areas, including Khorda, will remain humid.

Day 6 (April 24): Similar Weather Pattern Continues

The state is expected to witness continued heatwave conditions, with isolated thunderstorms in southern districts and high humidity in coastal regions.

Day 7 (April 25): Thunderstorm Activity Returns

Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati. However, coastal Odisha will continue to experience hot and humid conditions.

Safety Advisory for Residents

The IMD has urged all residents to remain cautious during this period of extreme weather.

  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours
  • Stay hydrated and wear light clothing
  • Take shelter during thunderstorms to avoid lightning risks
  • Follow local administration advisories for heatwave safety
