A low‑pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal has triggered widespread rainfall alerts across Odisha, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy to extremely heavy showers in several districts.
On Thursday, Mayurbhanj district was placed under a red alert for very heavy rainfall, while other regions were cautioned about thunderstorms accompanied by lightning. Authorities ordered the closure of all government and aided schools in Mayurbhanj as a precautionary measure.
Meteorologists noted that the cyclonic circulation associated with the system extends up to 9.4 km in the atmosphere, tilting southwestward. Over the next three days, orange and yellow warnings have been issued for districts including Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and parts of southern and western Odisha.
The IMD forecast indicates that rainfall activity will continue till September 12, with intensity peaking in southern Odisha. From September 13 to 17, no warnings have been issued, suggesting a likely reduction in rainfall activity.
Officials urged residents to remain cautious, as heavy showers could lead to waterlogging and disruption of normal life in vulnerable areas.
