Udaypur Beach in Bhograi block of Balasore district, once known for its pristine sands and casuarina groves, faces renewed scrutiny as illegal liquor sales thrive ahead of New Year celebrations.
A recent video report captured alcohol vending during preparations for a large-scale “Biggest Night Celebration” event. The footage, widely shared on social media, shows crowded makeshift stalls openly selling liquor under festive banners and decorations.
Although authorities prohibit alcohol consumption and parking in the beach area, vendors continue operating without restraint, drawing large crowds. Observers describe the beach turning into a “Goa-like open bar hub,” sparking concerns about public safety and damaging the site’s reputation.
Local residents have repeatedly raised alarms over the issue. Reports confirm that the illicit liquor trade has plagued Udaypur Beach for months, with similar complaints surfacing earlier in 2025. The beach’s proximity to the Subarnarekha River mouth and its popularity as a weekend getaway have made it a hotspot for such activities, often fueling anti-social behaviour, littering, and disturbances.
Authorities conducted raids in the past, including seizures of foreign liquor, yet enforcement remains inconsistent. The Odisha government has stressed its commitment to cracking down on illegal alcohol sales statewide, but incidents like this highlight persistent gaps in regulation at tourist destinations.
