Hours after President Donald Trump amplified a podcast describing India as a “hellhole,” Washington moved swiftly to contain the fallout.
A US Embassy spokesperson emphasised that Trump regards India as “a great country” and highlighted strong bilateral ties.
In response, the US Embassy underscored Trump’s positive view of India, noting his reference to “a very good friend of mine at the top.” Meanwhile, India’s Ministry of External Affairs refrained from direct condemnation, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stating only, “We’ve seen some reports. That’s where I’ll leave it.”
Savage’s podcast went further, alleging that Asian immigrants misuse citizenship laws and exploit public services. His letter accompanying the broadcast described Indian and Chinese immigrants as “gangsters with laptops,” intensifying criticism of the rhetoric.
The episode highlights the sensitivity of immigration debates in the US and the importance of diplomatic messaging in preserving ties with New Delhi.
