Danish tennis star Holger Rune delivered an electrifying performance to defeat Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
Rune overcame an early deficit to win 7-6(6), 6-2, claiming his first title of the season and snapping Alcaraz’s nine-match winning streak.

Rune showed tremendous resilience, rallying from a break down in the first set before sealing victory with an emphatic second-set display. Alcaraz, struggling with an upper right leg injury, took a medical timeout, but Rune remained composed to capitalize on his opponent’s weakened movement.
“This means the world to me. I had to stay mentally tough because Carlos plays big-time tennis. The first set was a battle, and winning it was crucial,” Rune said after the match.
Rune’s mental game was key to his success. Reflecting on previous encounters between Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, Rune took inspiration from Djokovic’s Olympic final strategy, focusing on consistency and defensive play.
“I remembered how Novak played against him and decided to implement that approach,” Rune revealed.

Both players have now won two matches each in their head-to-head encounters, solidifying their status as two of the most promising young stars in tennis.
During the trophy ceremony, Alcaraz praised Rune’s efforts, saying, “We’ve known each other since we were 12. Time flies, and I’m proud of how far we’ve come. Congratulations on a fantastic week.”
