Odisha is bracing for continuous heavy rainfall through May 30 as a low-pressure system forms over the Bay of Bengal, coupled with intensified pre-monsoon showers, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported.
The low-pressure area is expected to develop over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal by May 27, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across several districts of the state.
IMD’s Day-Wise Weather Warnings:
-
Day 1 (till May 25 morning): Orange alert for gusty winds (40–50 kmph) and thunderstorms in Balasore, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Malkangiri, and Ganjam. Heavy to very heavy rain likely in Bhadrak, Cuttack, and Kendrapada.
-
Day 2 (May 25–26): Yellow alert for Rayagada, Gajapati, Koraput, and Mayurbhanj.
-
Day 3 (May 26–27): Warning extended to Sundargarh, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, and Puri.
-
Day 4 (May 27–28): Strong winds and heavy rain predicted in Balasore, Jajpur, and Ganjam.
The IMD is monitoring the system closely, warning that conditions could intensify further.
Contributing to the wet spell is the early onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala—reported eight days ahead of its usual June 1 arrival. This marks only the third early onset in more than three decades, with previous early arrivals in 1990 and 2009.
Meteorologists believe this early monsoon, combined with the developing system, could lead to an advanced onset over Odisha, potentially before the typical June 10–12 window.
The public and local authorities have been advised to remain vigilant, especially in vulnerable districts, as rainfall activity is expected to intensify further in the coming days.
