The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of western and northern Odisha on Sunday, while several other districts are expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds as monsoon activity intensifies across the state.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, seven districts—Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh and Nuapada—are likely to receive heavy rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm over the next 24 hours.
Yellow warning issued for multiple districts
The weather office said the rain-bearing system is expected to remain active until Monday, bringing widespread rainfall to coastal, northern and western Odisha.
A yellow warning has been issued for 15 districts, cautioning residents about thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall. Authorities have advised people to remain alert, especially in areas prone to waterlogging and flash flooding.
Heavy rain likely in three districts
Among the affected regions, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sundargarh are expected to receive the most intense rainfall, with heavy downpours likely to disrupt normal life in some areas.
The IMD has also forecast surface wind speeds of 30–40 kmph during thunderstorms, increasing the risk of damage to temporary structures, uprooting of weak trees and disruptions to outdoor activities.
Advisory for residents
The weather department has urged residents to:
- Avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
- Stay indoors during periods of lightning and strong winds.
- Follow updates and advisories issued by local authorities.
- Exercise caution while travelling, particularly in low-lying and waterlogged areas.
The forecast comes as several parts of Odisha continue to experience monsoon showers, with heavy rainfall already affecting normal life in some districts during the ongoing Rath Yatra period.
