FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended football’s governing body after its decision to overturn Folarin Balogun’s World Cup suspension sparked widespread criticism and allegations of political influence.
The controversy intensified after US President Donald Trump confirmed that he personally contacted Infantino to request a review of Balogun’s red card before the United States’ FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium.
Why Balogun’s Suspension Was Reversed
Balogun had been set to miss the knockout match after receiving a red card during the United States’ victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
However, FIFA announced on Sunday that the suspension had been lifted, allowing the striker to feature against Belgium.
The decision immediately generated debate across the football world, with several officials, former players and governing bodies questioning the timing and process behind the ruling.
Donald Trump Confirms He Contacted FIFA
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he reached out to Infantino because he believed the red card decision deserved another look.
“I didn’t think it was a foul,” Trump said, adding that he only requested a review and did not instruct FIFA to overturn the decision.
His remarks fuelled further discussion over whether political leaders should become involved in sporting disciplinary matters.
Infantino Says FIFA’s Judicial Process Is Independent
Responding to the criticism, Infantino said FIFA’s disciplinary decisions are handled by independent judicial bodies and are not influenced by him.
He explained that he informed Trump there was an ongoing legal process and that the matter would be decided by the appropriate independent committee.
Infantino added that while he sometimes agrees and sometimes disagrees with disciplinary decisions, he respects the autonomy of FIFA’s judicial bodies.
Belgium’s Appeal Rejected
Belgium’s football association challenged FIFA’s decision before the Round of 16 fixture, but FIFA ruled the appeal inadmissible.
Belgian officials also said they had not received a detailed explanation for the suspension reversal before the match.
Belgium eventually defeated the United States 4-1 to secure a place in the World Cup quarterfinals.
UEFA and Football Figures Criticise FIFA
The decision drew sharp criticism from several leading voices in football.
UEFA said FIFA had crossed “a red line” by reversing the suspension and warned that such actions could undermine confidence in the sport’s rules and governance.
Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp questioned the reported involvement of political figures, while former England defender Gary Neville described the episode as damaging for the credibility of the World Cup.
Norway coach Ståle Solbakken and Belgium coach Rudi Garcia also criticised the decision, expressing concern about its implications for sporting fairness.
Infantino Responds to Political Influence Claims
Infantino acknowledged that he regularly speaks with heads of state, football officials and business leaders on matters related to the FIFA World Cup.
He stressed that conversations with political leaders do not determine disciplinary outcomes and reiterated that FIFA’s judicial panels operate independently.
The controversy surrounding Balogun’s eligibility has become one of the biggest talking points of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with debate continuing over transparency, governance and the independence of football’s disciplinary process.
