The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a low‑pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions by August 12, likely to bring heavy rainfall and squally winds across Odisha.

A cyclonic circulation currently active over the Bay extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level, and under its influence, the system is expected to develop within the next few days. The formation is likely to enhance rainfall activity, particularly in northern Odisha and neighbouring districts.

According to the forecast, light to heavy rain is expected today in Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Cuttack, Khordha, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Nayagarh, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Angul, Debagarh, and Sundargarh. Other northern districts may also experience medium to heavy showers.

Residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas have been advised to remain cautious. The IMD has also issued a fishermen warning, urging them not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast from August 11 to 14.

Squally weather with wind speeds of 35–45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h, is expected during this period, with rough to very rough sea conditions likely. Ferry and fishing operations have been suspended in vulnerable coastal zones.

Authorities are monitoring the evolving system closely as Odisha prepares for another spell of intense monsoon activity.
