From Visa Chaos to FIFA World Cup Glory: South Africa Shock South Korea to Reach Knockout Stage

South Africa completed one of the most inspiring stories of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by defeating South Korea and securing a historic place in the knockout stage for the first time.

Just days before the tournament began, South Africa’s participation was in doubt due to administrative issues and visa delays. Yet against all odds, Hugo Broos’ side has emerged as one of the biggest surprise packages of the competition.

Visa Delays Nearly Derailed South Africa’s World Cup Dream

Only 10 days before their opening match against Mexico, South Africa still did not know whether they would be able to travel to the tournament.

Administrative complications and visa delays disrupted preparations and left the squad struggling for valuable training time ahead of the biggest event in world football.

The problems continued when South Africa suffered a difficult start against Mexico.

Two players were sent off during the match. Sphephelo Sithole received a red card for a last-man challenge, while Themba Zwane was later dismissed for striking an opponent. FIFA subsequently handed Zwane a three-match suspension.

At that moment, South Africa’s World Cup campaign appeared to be heading toward an early exit.

Bafana Bafana Refuse to Give Up

Instead of allowing setbacks to define their tournament, South Africa responded with determination.

The team earned a valuable 1-1 draw against Czech Republic to keep qualification hopes alive.

That result set up a decisive clash against South Korea, where a victory would guarantee a place in the knockout rounds.

Thapelo Maseko Delivers Historic Moment

South Korea started brightly and created early pressure, forcing South Africa to defend deep.

However, Bafana Bafana gradually settled into the match by controlling possession in midfield and launching dangerous counter-attacks.

After creating several chances, South Africa finally broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute.

Thapelo Maseko drove into the penalty area and calmly finished through the legs of a defender to score the goal that would make history.

South Africa finished the match with 14 shots and steadily took control after surviving the early Korean pressure.

Defensive Discipline Seals Famous Victory

As South Korea pushed for an equaliser, South Africa switched to a compact defensive setup.

The backline stood firm, clearing crosses and winning crucial aerial duels during the closing stages.

Midfielder Yaya Sithole, who missed part of the tournament after being sent off in the opening game, returned with an outstanding performance and played a key role in protecting the lead.

Son Heung-min Unable to Inspire South Korea

South Korean captain Son Heung-min entered the match at halftime but struggled to influence the contest.

South Korea attempted to attack through pace on the wings and quick passing combinations, but mistakes in midfield allowed South Africa to regain control repeatedly.

The defeat leaves South Korea relying on results elsewhere to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

With a goal difference of minus one, their chances of advancing remain uncertain.

Mexico Finish Group Stage With Perfect Record

Elsewhere in Group A, Mexico completed a flawless group-stage campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Czech Republic.

Already assured of top spot, Mexico rotated several players but still dominated proceedings.

Goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones, and Alvaro Fidalgo secured maximum points and maintained Mexico’s perfect record.

The match also featured a milestone moment as veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made his 154th international appearance and sixth FIFA World Cup appearance.

South Africa’s Fairytale Journey Continues

Few expected South Africa to advance from the group stage after their troubled build-up and disappointing opening match.

However, resilience, tactical discipline, and belief have transformed Bafana Bafana into one of the tournament’s most compelling stories.

Now, with a place in the knockout stage secured, South Africa has the opportunity to continue rewriting history on football’s biggest stage.
