India and the United States have moved closer to finalizing an interim trade agreement after completing multiple rounds of high-level discussions aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer concluded two days of ministerial-level talks in New Delhi, with both sides acknowledging significant progress toward a mutually beneficial trade framework.

India and US Report Significant Progress

Following the discussions, the Ministry of Commerce stated that negotiating teams from both countries have made substantial progress in recent months.

The talks focused on creating a pathway for an interim trade agreement, which will serve as an important step toward a comprehensive India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

Sharing an update on social media, Piyush Goyal said the meetings reviewed ongoing trade discussions and explored new opportunities to deepen economic cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies.

Interim Deal Key Step Towards Mission 500

The proposed interim agreement is expected to pave the way for a broader trade pact envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump.

Under the ambitious “Mission 500” initiative, both countries aim to more than double bilateral trade and achieve a trade volume of $500 billion by 2030.

Officials believe the interim agreement will help accelerate negotiations for the larger and more comprehensive trade partnership.

Tariff Structure Remains Main Hurdle

Sources familiar with the discussions indicated that most major issues have already been addressed. However, negotiations continue regarding a suitable tariff framework for Indian exports entering the US market.

India is seeking tariff arrangements that provide a competitive advantage over other manufacturing and export-focused economies, including China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

The tariff issue remains one of the final major areas requiring resolution before the interim agreement can be announced.

Technology and AI Cooperation in Focus

Speaking about future opportunities, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer highlighted India’s growing role in technology and innovation.

He noted that both countries are exploring cooperation in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, digital trade, advanced technologies, and future-focused industries.

Greer also praised the strong relationship between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, saying the partnership continues to expand across multiple sectors beyond trade.

Key Areas Discussed During Negotiations

The latest round of discussions covered several strategic areas, including:

  • Enhanced market access
  • Digital trade cooperation
  • Supply chain resilience
  • Reduction of non-tariff barriers
  • Strategic technology partnerships
  • Manufacturing and investment opportunities
  • Agricultural trade cooperation

Both sides emphasized the need for an agreement that delivers tangible benefits for businesses, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, and consumers.

India Maintains Flexible Approach on Deadlines

While the United States has set July 24 as the expiry date for its temporary 10% tariff structure on Indian imports, India has reiterated that trade negotiations will not be driven by deadlines.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated that India prioritizes balanced and beneficial outcomes over rushed agreements.
