In a major political development that could reshape discussions within Odisha’s political landscape, former IAS officer Sujata Rout Karthikeyan is likely to formally join the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today.
According to highly placed sources, the joining ceremony is expected to take place at Sankha Bhawan, the party headquarters in Bhubaneswar, during a key organisational meeting chaired by BJD president Naveen Patnaik.
Major Development for BJD
Sujata Karthikeyan, a former senior bureaucrat and wife of former IAS officer VK Pandian, has long been associated with Odisha’s administrative and governance ecosystem.
Sources indicate that Naveen Patnaik may officially announce her induction into the party during the meeting, which is expected to witness the participation of senior leaders, MLAs, district-level office bearers, and party workers from across Odisha.
Although the BJD has not yet issued an official statement regarding her entry, party insiders suggest that preparations for the announcement are already in place.
Joining as a Party Worker
Sources familiar with the development said Sujata Karthikeyan is likely to join the regional party as a primary member and general worker.
At present, there are no indications that she will be assigned any organisational post or leadership responsibility immediately after joining.
Party leaders are reportedly keen to allow her to begin her political journey from the grassroots level before taking on any formal role within the organisation.
From Bureaucracy to Politics
Sujata Karthikeyan took voluntary retirement from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in March last year after a distinguished career in public administration.
During her tenure, she held several important assignments and was known for her work in areas related to social welfare, education, and women’s empowerment.
Her potential entry into active politics comes at a time when the BJD is working to strengthen its organisational structure following the 2024 Odisha Assembly elections.
Why Her Entry Matters
Political observers believe Sujata Karthikeyan’s induction could be significant due to her administrative experience and public profile.
Her association with VK Pandian, who played a prominent role in the previous Naveen Patnaik-led government, is also expected to generate considerable political interest.
The development may further fuel discussions about the future leadership structure and organisational strategy of the BJD as it prepares for upcoming political challenges.
Awaiting Official Confirmation
While party sources remain confident about the development, an official announcement from the BJD leadership is still awaited.
All eyes are now on Sankha Bhawan, where the organisational meeting is expected to provide clarity on Sujata Karthikeyan’s political future and her role within the party.
