Delhi Police have registered a fresh First Information Report (FIR) against senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, citing allegations of assaulting police personnel and obstructing government work during a high-intensity INDIA bloc demonstration.
This development comes right on the heels of a separate case filed earlier over a forceful entry into Akashvani Bhawan, adjacent to the Election Commission headquarters. The escalating political friction stems from ongoing opposition protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the contentious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) controversy.
High Drama on Central Delhi Streets
The latest confrontation unfolded after opposition leaders held a lunch meeting at Janpath and attempted to march toward Jantar Mantar. Blocked midway by security forces, the leaders and their supporters staged a determined sit-in at a central Delhi roundabout near the Shangri-La hotel.
Visuals from the scene captured striking scenes of resistance:
-
Priyanka Gandhi and fellow women leaders sat on the asphalt holding copies of the Constitution before being cleared by a large contingent of women security personnel.
-
Rahul Gandhi was carried away by security staff and placed into a police bus, which was promptly surrounded and climbed upon by supportive party leaders like Amarinder Singh, Raja Warring, and Udai Bhanu Chib.
In total, 91 people were detained during the central Delhi standoff, though all were released later that evening.
The Akashvani Bhawan Precedent
The earlier FIR stemmed from a dramatic breach where opposition MPs and supporters allegedly entered Akashvani Bhawan without authorisation. Reports noted that two security guards underwent medical examinations following minor injuries, and minor infrastructural damage was reported at the site.
Undeterred by the mounting legal actions—which now add up significantly—Rahul Gandhi brushed off the pressure. Responding to reporters, he remarked, “I have 45 FIRs against me. My target is that there should be 100 FIRs against me. Every FIR against me is a medal for me.”
With the opposition alliance gearing up for further demonstrations, political tensions in the national capital show no signs of cooling down.
