Flavio Cobolli secured the most significant victory of his career on Saturday, defeating third-seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) to capture the ATP 500 trophy at the Bitpanda Hamburg Open.
The 23-year-old displayed remarkable composure and agility, overpowering Rublev in the baseline exchanges and fending off two break points to serve out the match.
Cobolli, who won his maiden tour-level title in Bucharest earlier this year, rose to the occasion once again, showing aggressive play and tactical precision against the Russian. His dominant performance propelled him nine spots up to No. 26 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings, marking a career-high ranking when the updated standings are released on Monday.
Reflecting on his victory, Cobolli was visibly emotional. “I think it is the best moment and match of my life, for sure. I played unbelievably today, and I am just so happy,” he said. Surrounded by his family, friends, and girlfriend, the Italian savoured the biggest moment of his tennis journey.
Rublev, a former Hamburg champion, had hoped to add another ATP 500 title to his season’s achievements after his Doha victory earlier in the year, but he struggled against Cobolli’s relentless attacking game. Despite the loss, Rublev improved his ranking, climbing two spots to No. 15.
The win cements Cobolli’s status as one of the rising stars on the ATP tour, and with his momentum building, he will look ahead to greater challenges in the season ahead.
