A fisherman suffered severe injuries after a dynamite blast during fishing at Gopalpali canal under Deogarh police limits in Bijayanagar area on Thursday morning.
According to reports, Sanjay Birua, 32, son of Patra Birua from Bijayanagar village, went to Gopalpali canal to catch fish using dynamite. The explosive detonated unexpectedly, causing serious injuries. His right hand was torn apart, and his face sustained deep wounds.
Family members rushed to the spot and rescued him. They immediately took him to the Barakot Community Health Centre for treatment. Doctors referred him to Deogarh District Headquarters Hospital as his condition worsened. Later, he was shifted to Burla Medical College and Hospital for advanced medical care.
Local sources said the explosion occurred due to the mishandling of the dynamite. Police have started verifying how the explosive material was obtained and whether illegal fishing practices are common in the area.
