Mexico made a dream start to the FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over South Africa in the opening match of the tournament at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Thursday.
Backed by a passionate crowd of 80,824 fans, the co-host nation delivered a confident performance to secure all three points in Group A and ignite celebrations across the country.
Quiñones Gives Mexico Early Advantage
Mexico wasted little time in asserting their dominance. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring in the ninth minute, sending the home supporters into a frenzy.
The 29-year-old forward, who enjoyed an outstanding season in the Saudi Pro League, continued his impressive form by registering the first goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Making his World Cup debut, Quiñones showcased composure and precision to put Mexico firmly in control of the contest.
Raúl Jiménez Seals the Victory
Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled Mexico’s lead in the 66th minute with a powerful header that left the South African defence helpless.
The goal was particularly significant for Jiménez, as it marked his first World Cup goal in three tournament appearances. It also took his international tally to 46 goals, drawing him level with Mexican legend Jared Borgetti as the country’s second-highest international scorer.
Only Javier “Chicharito” Hernández remains ahead of him in Mexico’s all-time scoring chart.
South Africa Finish with Nine Men
South Africa’s challenge became increasingly difficult after two players were sent off during the match.
Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane both received red cards, forcing the African side to play with nine men for the closing stages.
Mexico also finished the game with ten players after defender César Montes was shown a red card during stoppage time, but the dismissal had little impact on the final result.
Strong Start for Co-Hosts Mexico
The victory provides Mexico with an ideal start to the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
El Tri entered the tournament eager to bounce back from their disappointing group-stage exit at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Thursday’s performance suggested the team is determined to make a deeper run this time around.
Mexico now sit top of Group A with three points and will face South Korea in Guadalajara next week.
Meanwhile, South Africa will look to recover when they take on the Czech Republic in Atlanta.
Historic World Cup Underway
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is the largest edition in tournament history, featuring 48 national teams competing across North America.
With a packed Azteca Stadium witnessing the opening match, the tournament has already delivered excitement, drama and memorable moments, setting the stage for an action-packed month of football.
