The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finalised the schedule window for the 2027 ODI World Cup, bringing back the popular 14-team format and setting the stage for what could be the final World Cup appearance of Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

According to reports, the ICC has agreed on a tournament window from October 4 to November 21, 2027, with matches set to be played across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The decision was reportedly approved during the ICC Board Meeting held in Ahmedabad on the sidelines of the IPL 2026 final.

ODI World Cup Returns to South Africa After 24 Years

The 2027 edition will mark the return of the ODI World Cup to South Africa for the first time since 2003.

A total of 54 matches are expected to be played during the tournament, with South Africa hosting the majority of the fixtures.

Eight venues in South Africa are likely to host 41 matches, while Zimbabwe will stage games in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls.

Namibia is also preparing for its biggest cricket event in history, with the new Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium expected to be operational before the tournament.

ICC Brings Back 14-Team World Cup Format

One of the biggest highlights of the 2027 World Cup is the return of the 14-team structure.

The previous two editions in England and India featured only 10 teams, drawing criticism from fans and former players who wanted broader participation.

Under the new format:

  • 14 teams will participate
  • Teams will be divided into two groups of seven
  • The top three teams from each group will qualify for the Super Six stage
  • The best teams from the Super Six round will advance to the knockout phase

South Africa and Zimbabwe have already secured qualification as host nations, while Namibia remains in the qualification pathway.

Kohli and Rohit Preparing for One Final World Cup Mission

The 2027 ODI World Cup could become one of the most emotional tournaments in modern cricket history.

Indian icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are widely expected to make one final attempt to win the coveted ODI World Cup trophy after narrowly missing out in the 2023 final against Australia.

For Kohli, the 2027 edition would be his fifth ODI World Cup appearance, while Rohit would be playing his fourth.

Both players have repeatedly expressed their desire to remain fit and available for the tournament.

Kohli Opens Up on His Future

Recently, Kohli addressed speculation surrounding his future and made it clear that he still has unfinished business in international cricket.

The former India captain said his primary focus remains contributing value to the team and pursuing another opportunity to represent India on the biggest stage.

Kohli emphasised that playing in a World Cup for India remains a special motivation and that he continues to work hard towards that goal.

Excitement Builds for Cricket’s Biggest Event

With the return of the 14-team format, multiple host nations and the possibility of witnessing the final World Cup campaigns of Kohli and Rohit, anticipation for the 2027 ODI World Cup is already growing rapidly.

The tournament is expected to combine the excitement of global competition with the emotional farewell of some of cricket’s greatest stars, making it one of the most anticipated editions in World Cup history.
