FIFA has overturned the automatic one-match suspension handed to United States forward Folarin Balogun, allowing him to play in his team’s FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match against Belgium after a review of his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The decision has generated widespread debate after reports claimed that US President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino and requested a review of the incident. According to an Associated Press report citing an anonymous source familiar with the conversation, the phone call took place shortly after the United States secured a 2-0 victory in the Round of 32.
Why Was Folarin Balogun Sent Off?
Balogun, who has been one of the USA’s standout performers with three goals during the tournament, received a straight red card after a challenge on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic.
The tackle was widely debated, with many analysts and supporters arguing that the challenge appeared mistimed rather than intentional. The incident also drew comparisons with a similar challenge involving Lionel Messi earlier in the tournament, where the Argentine captain escaped without a red card.
Historic FIFA Decision Reverses Suspension
Following its review, FIFA rescinded Balogun’s automatic suspension, making him eligible for the knockout clash against Belgium.
According to reports, this is believed to be the first time since 1962 that a straight red card at a FIFA World Cup has been overturned before the resulting suspension was served.
After the decision, Trump posted on social media thanking FIFA for what he described as correcting an injustice.
Belgium Criticises FIFA’s U-Turn
The decision sparked a strong reaction from the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) and Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia.
Garcia questioned the unprecedented nature of the ruling, saying it felt like an April Fools’ joke and arguing that the federation was defending the integrity and fairness of international football.
The RBFA later confirmed it is examining all available legal options to protect what it described as the principles of fair play and the rights of participating teams.
Garcia declined to comment on whether Trump’s reported intervention influenced FIFA’s decision.
USA Camp Welcomes Verdict
Inside the American camp, the reversal was welcomed by players and coaching staff.
Reports said players learned of the decision while travelling to training after seeing announcements on social media.
USA captain Christian Pulisic argued that Balogun’s challenge showed no intent and suggested that more serious tackles had gone unpunished elsewhere in the tournament.
Head coach Mauricio Pochettino also supported FIFA’s review, saying his team had already been significantly disadvantaged by playing with 10 players following what he considered an unfair red-card decision.
World Cup Debate Continues
FIFA’s rare reversal has become one of the biggest talking points of the 2026 World Cup, raising questions about disciplinary reviews, consistency in officiating and the circumstances surrounding the governing body’s decision.
While the United States celebrates Balogun’s return for a crucial knockout fixture, Belgium’s objections ensure that the controversy is likely to remain in focus even after the Round of 16 concludes.
