FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that Iran will play in the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
He said Iran’s participation remains certain despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Speaking at a CNBC economic forum, Infantino stated, “Iran is coming for sure. We hope that by then the situation will be peaceful.” He emphasized that football should remain inclusive and that qualified nations deserve to represent their people.
Iran will play its group-stage matches in Los Angeles and Seattle, with its training base in Tucson, Arizona. Infantino praised the Iranian team’s quality and determination after meeting them during a friendly match in Antalya, Turkey.
He said, “The Iranian team is coming for sure. They represent their people. They have qualified. The players want to play.” Infantino reiterated that sports should exist outside politics, even though complete separation is difficult.
He added, “We don’t live on the moon; we live on planet Earth. But if nobody believes in building bridges, we are doing that job.” His remarks underscored FIFA’s commitment to maintaining global unity through football.
The 2026 World Cup will feature 48 teams across North America, marking the largest tournament in FIFA history. Infantino’s assurance ends speculation about Iran’s participation amid regional tensions.
