Odisha’s egg market has witnessed a sharp spike, with retail prices climbing to Rs 9 per egg from Rs 7.15 just days ago. Wholesale rates have also surged, with trays now selling at Rs 270 compared to Rs 180 earlier.
Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallick attributed the hike to multiple factors, including rising global demand, higher exports, and increased chicken mortality during the summer. He noted that traders are selling eggs at Rs 7.15 while retailers charge consumers around Rs 9.
“All these issues are the main reasons for the increase in egg prices,” Mallick said.
To bridge the supply gap, the state government has announced additional support for the poultry sector. Beyond the existing subsidy of up to Rs 1 crore, another Rs 10 crore subsidy will be provided to stabilise supply.
Officials said prices are expected to ease once production improves. The government has set a target of producing 2 crore eggs per day to meet demand and restore market balance.
