Party Will Probe Jual Oram’s Complaint Internally, Says Odisha BJP Chief Manmohan Samal

Odisha’s political temperature rose again on Saturday after state BJP president Manmohan Samal said the party is fully aware of Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram’s charges against some party colleagues and will examine both his comments and his written complaint at the organisational level.

Samal’s intervention came after Oram, the six-time Sundargarh MP, alleged that certain leaders who joined the BJP from other parties had spent money on a smear campaign aimed at pushing him out of the Union Cabinet. He did not name anyone. He said he had already briefed state organisation secretary Manas Mohanty and submitted his allegations in writing.

Speaking to the press, Samal tried to separate two tracks. Oram’s remarks before cameras, he said, were the minister’s “completely personal opinion.” The written complaint, however, would be taken up inside the party, within the bounds of discipline and organisational process.

That distinction is important. Oram’s public comments had already given the Opposition an opening. He had claimed a propaganda drive was under way to tarnish his image so that others could claim a Cabinet berth, and he had warned that he would identify those behind it. The remarks followed the arrest of a Rourkela aide linked to a Circuit House case, a controversy the BJP had already moved on by suspending the worker.

Samal’s message was that the party will not ignore a senior minister’s written charge, but it also will not treat a television-facing outburst as an official party line. In practical terms, that means Mohanty’s office now holds the paper trail, and any inquiry will stay inside BJP structures unless the leadership decides otherwise.

For a party that only recently took power in Odisha, the episode is awkward. Oram is one of its oldest faces in the tribal belt. New entrants from other parties are also part of the present power map. An internal complaint that pits a Cabinet minister against unnamed colleagues is exactly the kind of friction the state unit would rather settle quietly.

Samal’s statement does two things at once. It reassures Oram that the complaint has been received. It also tells the rest of the party that public airing of intra-BJP grievances will be treated as personal, not organisational, until the inquiry is done.

Whether that inquiry produces names, action, or a closed file will decide if this remains a one-week controversy — or the first visible crack in Odisha BJP’s post-victory cohesion.
