Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday carried out raids at four sites in Kolkata, which included two apartments of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in relation to the purported financial fraud associated with the institution where a 31-year-old trainee female doctor was raped and murdered on August 9.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also raiding two additional locations in the Laketown and Tala areas of the city, targeting an office of a medical supplier and the home of a vendor who provided medicines to RG Kar Hospital.
These new searches follow recent ED raids across multiple sites in Howrah, Sonarpur, and Hooghly, West Bengal related to the same investigation.
Approximately two weeks prior, the central investigative agency initiated a case concerning alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College.
This case was instituted based on a First Information Report (FIR) by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which implicated Dr Ghosh in its investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor.
The CBI’s FIR charges include criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty, in addition to Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, all pertaining to financial malfeasance at RG Kar Medical College.
These charges constitute cognizable and non-bailable offences. Dr Sandip Ghosh held the position of principal at RG Kar Hospital from February 2021 until September 2023. Despite being transferred in October 2023, he mysteriously returned to his post within a month.
He continued in this role up until the violent rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The CBI arrested Dr Ghosh on September 2 in a corruption case and subsequently placed in the agency’s custody.
