Aditya Dhar’s much-anticipated film Dhurandhar has finally been cleared for release after a re-examination by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Tuesday. The clearance comes after a week of intense controversy, following claims by the late Major Mohit Sharma’s parents that the film was based on his life. The Delhi High Court’s directive led to a detailed review, during which the CBFC confirmed that the film does not depict or reference the Army officer.
The certification also disclosed key details about the film’s story and characters, effectively quelling speculation about any parallels with Major Sharma’s life.
Film Certified ‘A’; Among India’s Longest Releases
Dhurandhar has been approved with an ‘A’ certificate and a staggering runtime of 3 hours and 34 minutes, making it one of the longest Indian films in nearly two decades and one of Bollywood’s longest action dramas.
The official synopsis reveals that the film is set against the backdrop of two major historical events:
-
The 1999 IC-814 hijacking, and
-
The 2001 Indian Parliament attack.
Ranveer Singh plays the lead character in a narrative that spans India and Pakistan.
What the Synopsis Reveals
According to the CBFC’s detailed synopsis:
“The story follows India’s Intelligence Bureau Chief Ajay Sanyal, who designs a high-stakes mission to infiltrate and dismantle a dangerous terrorist network operating out of Pakistan. To carry out this mission, Sanyal recruits a 20-year-old boy from Punjab who is imprisoned for a revenge-driven crime. Identifying his potential, Sanyal shapes him into an undercover asset capable of entering Karachi’s ruthless mafia circuit.”
This description indicates that Ranveer’s character Hamza is not an Indian Army officer, but an intelligence-crafted spy—countering earlier speculation that he portrayed Major Mohit Sharma.
The film also features real-life personalities from Pakistan’s criminal history, including gangster Rehman Dakait and Karachi SP Chaudhary Aslam, portrayed by Akshaye Khanna and Sanjay Dutt.
4-Minute Post-Credits Scene Confirms Sequel
Sources confirm that Dhurandhar includes a four-minute post-credits sequence, functioning as a teaser for Dhurandhar Part 2. The scene is expected to extend the plot directly from where the first film concludes.
Massive Release Planned
The film stars Arjun Rampal, Sara Arjun, and Rakesh Bedi in pivotal roles and is scheduled to release on 5 December across 5,000 screens in India. With high expectations and strong buzz, Dhurandhar is being positioned as one of the biggest Hindi film releases of 2025.
