Odisha currently operates 35 cold storages, according to a statement made in the Assembly by Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan.
He presented the details while responding to a question raised by Congress Legislature Party leader Rama Chandra Kadam.
The minister clarified that 33 private and 2 government-run cold storages are functional at present. Over the last ten years, the state has constructed 26 new cold storage facilities, strengthening infrastructure for agricultural and perishable goods.
Out of these, 22 remain operational while 4 are non-functional, the minister informed. In total, Odisha has 20 government and 78 private cold storages, reflecting a significant expansion in storage capacity.
At the sub-division level, the government has set a target to build 58 cold storages, with an allocation of Rs 252 crore. This initiative aims to improve preservation facilities for farmers and traders, ensuring better market access and reduced wastage.
Additionally, the minister revealed that applications have been received to operationalise 15 new cold storages and revive 2 non-functional ones. These proposals are under consideration to further enhance the state’s cold chain infrastructure.
