As polling for the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 gained momentum on April 29, political rhetoric intensified, with Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien issuing a direct challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The remarks came amid high voter turnout, allegations of irregularities, and heightened political tensions across the state.

Derek O’Brien’s Challenge to PM Modi

In a video message shared on social media, Derek O’Brien called on the Prime Minister to resign if TMC secures victory in the state. Referring to earlier campaign statements, he urged Modi to “accept the challenge” and step down should Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party return to power.

The statement reflects the escalating war of words between major political parties as the election reaches a crucial stage.

High-Stakes Phase 2 Voting Underway

The second phase of polling covers 142 constituencies across several districts, involving approximately 32.1 million voters. A total of 1,448 candidates are in the fray, making this phase critical in determining the electoral outcome.

The Election Commission of India has deployed extensive security measures to ensure smooth and fair polling, with voters turning out in significant numbers since early morning.

Allegations of Intimidation and Irregularities

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised concerns over the conduct of the elections, alleging voter intimidation and misuse of central forces. She claimed that some officials and observers deployed from outside the state were influencing the electoral process.

Banerjee also alleged that party workers were being targeted and prevented from carrying out their activities, raising questions about the fairness of the polling environment. She reiterated her call for peaceful and transparent elections.

Political Campaign and Key Contest

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the principal opposition in the state, has mounted an aggressive campaign, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi holding multiple rallies ahead of the polls.

The contest remains highly competitive, with both TMC and BJP vying for dominance in a politically significant state. The outcome of this phase is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the final results.

With strong voter participation, sharp political exchanges, and allegations from multiple sides, the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 continue to draw national attention. As polling progresses, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and transparent democratic process.
