Democratic candidates dominated U.S. Congressional districts with high concentrations of Indian-American voters during Tuesday’s 2026 midterm elections, capturing 84 of the 100 seats with the largest Indian-American populations, according to an analysis of data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

In addition to retaining established Democratic strongholds, the party wrested six seats away from Republicans, reducing the GOP tally across these 100 key districts to 15. The Democratic total could rise further as vote counting continues in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, where Indian-American physician Dr. Amish Shah leads incumbent Republican opposition.

The top 100 districts represent more than half of the roughly 2.6 million eligible Indian-American voters nationwide.

  • California Clean Sweep: Democratic performance was strongest in California, where the party won 19 of the 20 seats on the top-100 list. Representative Ro Khanna secured his sixth consecutive term in California’s 17th Congressional District (Silicon Valley)—the most heavily Indian-American district in the nation, home to approximately 146,000 Indian-Americans.
  • Northeast & Midwest Totals: Democrats swept all top-100 districts across New York, Illinois, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, unseating Republican House India Caucus members Brian Fitzpatrick (PA) and Tom Kean Jr. (NJ).
  • Republican Resilience in Texas: Despite national headwinds, Texas Republicans held their ground, securing 9 of the 13 state districts on the top-100 list. Incumbent Republican Rep. Beth Van Duyne retained her seat in a district housing nearly 23,000 Indian-Americans, while Trever Nehls won Texas’s 22nd District (Sugar Land), home to 45,000 Indian-American residents. Texas also yielded a GOP flip in the redrawn 32nd District, won by Republican Jace Yarbrough.
