What was meant to be a leisurely picnic amid the pine-covered hills of Daringbadi, often hailed as the “Kashmir of Odisha” for its cool climate and breathtaking landscapes, descended into chaos on Sunday when two groups of youths engaged in a heated brawl.
According to reports, the incident unfolded at Duluri Pine Forest in the Baliguda area of Kandhamal district. Eyewitnesses described how a seemingly minor argument escalated into physical altercations, with punches thrown and scuffles breaking out among a large crowd of picnickers. The forest, a popular spot attracting thousands of tourists annually for outings and nature escapes, is known for its unregulated vibe, which sometimes leads to disruptions fueled by alcohol consumption.
A 2.5-minute video circulating on social media captures the mayhem: crowds gathering around vehicles, including buses and cars, as individuals shove and grapple with each other. Police officers can be seen intervening, using a mild lathi charge to disperse the groups and restore order. Several youths involved in the fight were detained by local authorities, though no serious injuries were reported.
Daringbadi’s allure lies in its misty hills, dense pine forests, and pleasant weather, drawing families and groups for picnics, especially during weekends and holidays. However, this event highlights the need for better regulations to maintain peace in such natural havens.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the clash, with preliminary findings pointing to a dispute over space or personal rivalries. No formal charges have been filed yet, but the detained individuals are being questioned.
