The Common University Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG) 2026 faced disruptions across several examination centres on Friday after a technical glitch delayed the start of the test. The incident triggered concern among students and parents, while opposition leaders questioned the management of major national examinations.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) later clarified that the delay was caused by a technical issue reported by its technology partner, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The agency stated that the problem was resolved and candidates were provided with full compensatory time to complete their examinations.
What Happened During CUET UG 2026?
According to NTA, the technical issue affected the commencement of examinations at some centres on May 30. Reports indicated that the morning session was delayed by more than two hours in several locations.
To ensure fairness, NTA revised the schedule for subsequent sessions. The reporting time for the afternoon shift was adjusted, and candidates received the complete duration allotted for their exams.
The agency emphasized that no student would be disadvantaged due to the delay.
Opposition Leaders Criticise Government
The incident quickly became a political issue, with opposition leaders linking the delay to previous controversies surrounding national examinations.
Senior leaders from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticised the government, citing concerns related to the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, CBSE evaluation issues, and recent challenges faced during Staff Selection Commission examinations.
Several opposition leaders argued that repeated examination-related disruptions were affecting the confidence of students preparing for competitive tests.
NTA Responds to Concerns
In its official statement, the NTA said the technical glitch had been resolved and examination activities resumed smoothly.
The agency expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to students and families and provided a helpline number and email support for candidates requiring assistance.
Officials reiterated that all affected candidates were granted compensatory time and that examination integrity remained a priority.
Why CUET UG Is Important
Introduced in 2022, CUET UG serves as a common entrance examination for admission to undergraduate programmes in central universities and several participating institutions across India.
The examination was introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to create a standardized admission process and provide equal opportunities to students from diverse educational backgrounds.
Due to the large number of applicants and multiple subject combinations, the examination is conducted over several days and in multiple shifts.
Growing Focus on Examination Reforms
The latest disruption has renewed discussions about the technological and administrative challenges involved in conducting large-scale national examinations.
Education experts have highlighted the need for stronger digital infrastructure, enhanced monitoring systems, and contingency planning to ensure smooth examination processes for millions of students.
As the CUET UG 2026 examination cycle continues, students and parents will be closely watching how authorities address concerns and strengthen safeguards for future assessments.
