In a groundbreaking announcement, cricket is set to make a historic return to the Olympic Games after a hiatus of 128 years.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that the T20 format will feature six men’s and six women’s teams at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. A total of 90 players will compete in each event, marking a monumental moment for the global cricketing community.
Cricket is one of five new sports included in the LA28 Games, alongside squash, flag football, baseball/softball, and lacrosse. The qualification criteria are yet to be finalized, although host nation USA is anticipated to receive direct entry. The sport’s inclusion follows successful campaigns by the International Cricket Council (ICC), spearheaded by ICC Chairman Jay Shah, and underscores cricket’s growing presence in multi-sport events like the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
This milestone brings excitement to cricket fans worldwide, as the sport gears up to shine on the grandest sporting stage.
