Eight years after Crazy Rich Asians took the global box office by storm, the hit romantic comedy franchise is officially returning—this time as a television series.
HBO has greenlit an eight-episode drama series continuing the saga of Singapore’s elite families, adapting further storylines from author Kevin Kwan’s bestselling trilogy.
The project brings back core cast members Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng as series regulars, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role in a recurring capacity.
Original Creative Team Leads the TV Expansion
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 feature film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Joining her as executive producers are author Kevin Kwan, director Jon M. Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, alongside SK Global Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.
Switching to an episodic format gives the creative team freedom to dive deeper into Kwan’s sprawling literary universe beyond what a standard feature runtime allows.
”Eight years ago, Crazy Rich Asians changed my life… Since then, this cast has become movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers, and even an Oscar winner, so bringing everyone back together feels like coming home,” director Jon M. Chu said in an official statement. Addressing the long-standing questions from fans, he added: “Finally, I get to answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: ‘When are we getting the sequel?’ Well… bok bok, we’re back.”
”More Room to Breathe”
Showrunner Adele Lim echoed Chu’s enthusiasm, describing the series as a “Crazy Rich family reunion.”
”This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books,” Lim noted. “Our writers’ room is humming, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”
Author Kevin Kwan expressed similar excitement, noting that the television structure offers a dream opportunity to flesh out character arcs: “Getting to see my stories and characters come to life with the breathing room of an HBO series is a dream come true.”
The series will be co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television.
