Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to adopt collective measures to conserve foreign exchange and reduce dependency on imported commodities as global crude prices surge.

Addressing the nation, he recommended reviving work-from-home practices, cutting down on petrol and diesel use, postponing foreign travel, and pausing gold purchases for weddings for one year.

With crude oil climbing from around $70 to $126 per barrel, India faces imminent hikes in fuel costs. Petrol and diesel prices are expected to rise by ₹4–5 per litre before May 15, while LPG cylinders may increase by ₹40–50. Modi stressed that every household’s restraint could strengthen the national economy.

Beyond fuel and gold, he appealed for reduced edible oil consumption and urged farmers to shift from imported chemical fertilisers to natural farming methods. The government, meanwhile, has boosted LPG production, diversified crude imports, and directed refineries to operate above capacity, while cutting excise duties to shield consumers.

Modi’s message was clear: collective discipline in consumption—fuel, gold, edible oil, and fertilisers—will help India weather the global energy crisis and protect its economic stability.
