Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi called upon the officers of the Odisha Information Service (OIS) to evolve beyond traditional roles and harness the power of social media and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bridge the gap between the administration and the public.
Delivering the keynote address on ‘Emerging Trends in Social Media’ at an orientation programme held at the State Convention Centre, the Chief Minister laid out a dynamic roadmap for modern public communication in the state.
Redefining the Role of Information Officers
Emphasising that information officers must step out of traditional boundaries, CM Majhi noted that their responsibilities extend far beyond merely issuing routine press releases. “Public relations today demands active engagement. Information officers must act as a strong, living bridge between the government and the people,” the Chief Minister stated.
He advised officers to take a lead on social media platforms, using them not just as dissemination channels, but as tools to listen to citizen feedback and understand public sentiment.
Leveraging AI & Smart Technology Responsibly
Highlighting the rapid evolution of technology, Chief Minister Majhi encouraged the OIS officers to embrace emerging tools like AI and ChatGPT to streamline communication and broaden their reach. However, he cautioned that these technologies must be used responsibly and constructively for public good (Sadupayoga).
He stressed that high-quality, positive content should remain the cornerstone of government outreach, urging officers to focus on spreading constructive stories that inspire trust and participation.
Amplifying Welfare Schemes at the Grassroots
A major highlight of the address was the Chief Minister’s emphasis on ensuring that key government welfare programs effectively reach people at the grassroots level. He singled out flagship initiatives like the Subhadra Yojana for women empowerment and highlighted Odisha’s leading role in creating Lakhpati Didis.
According to CM Majhi, social media serves as a powerful instrument to empower these schemes by making information transparent, accessible, and engaging for beneficiaries across every corner of the state.
By embracing digital transformation, positive storytelling, and responsible AI integration, the Odisha Information Service is set to redefine public communication and make governance more responsive to citizen needs.
